Waiting on Wednesday (#52)

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill @ Breaking The Spine
in which we have the opportunity to spotlight upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's pick: JEK/HYDE by Amy Ross
Expected publication: October 3rd, 2017 by Harlequin Teen

Amy Ross brings readers an inventive modern retelling of Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Lulu and Jek are science nerds, and have been best friends since they were young…or at least they used to be. Lately Jek has been pulling away from Lulu, just as she's coming to terms with how she really feels about him. Just as she was ready to see if there could be something more between them.

But Lulu's thoughts are derailed by a mysterious new guy who's showing up at local parties. Hyde is the definition of a bad boy, and everybody knows it…but no one can seem to resist his charms. Girls can't stay away from him, and guys all want to be him. And even though Lulu's heart belongs to Jek, she can't deny Hyde's attraction either.

She also knows that there's something not quite right about Hyde. That the rumors of his backwoods parties make them sound a little more dangerous than what any of her friends are accustomed to. And she doesn't like the fact that Hyde seems to be cozying up to Jek, and that they seem to be intertwined in ways that have Lulu worrying for Jek's safety.

If Hyde has a dark secret, Lulu is determined to find out what it is, and to help Jek…before it's too late for both of them.

"Wrecked" by J.B. Salsbury

SERIES: Stand-alone
PUBLISHER: Headline Eternal
GENRE: Contemporary Romance
SOURCE: Publisher

It's been months since Aden Colt left the Army, and still the memories haunt him. When he moved into a tiny boat off the California coast, he thought he's found the perfect place to escape life. Then Sawyer shows up and turns his simple life upside down. Beautiful and sophisticated, Sawyer seems out of place in this laid-back beach town. Something is pushing her to experience everything she can—including Aden. But as much as he wants her, starting a relationship with Sawyer puts them both at risk. For Aden, the past doesn't stay there; it shows up unexpectedly, uncontrollably, and doesn't care whose life it wrecks.

I knew this would be the kind of roller-coaster read I like to immerse myself in, but I didn't know it would deliver more than a touching story with a broken hero. Indeed, dear Sawyer put me in a very unexpected emotional state with an extremely delicate situation to face and an unbearable thought.

War is already horrible, being haunted by the memories of it is quite dreadful. For Aden nothing makes much sense anymore, and nothing and no one seems to keep him sane, until the arrive of Sawyer does something to him and gives him what might be—a barely recognizable—hope. But when your worst enemy is yourself, it's hard to be saved. However, Sawyer could have what it takes to achieve the impossible. She is different and on a mission of her own, nothing to do with Aden and his past, but shocking and though nonetheless. I honestly don't know what kind of strength possessed her to do what she does here, I don't think I could be able to accept such a request, but I still put myself in her shoes and it wrecked me...

A heart-warming read that makes you contemplate life and how important it is to make the best out of every moment you got, even—and perhaps more so—when you think all is lost.

"Perfect Kind of Trouble" by Chelsea Fine

SERIES: Finding Fate #2
GENRE: NA Contemporary Romance
SOURCE: Publisher

Twenty-one-year-old Kayla Turner has lost everything. After spending most of her life taking care of her ailing mother, she just wants to spot a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel. So when her father—a man she barely knew—leaves her an inheritance, she finally breathes a sigh of relief... until she learns the inheritance comes with strings. Strings in the form of handsome playboy Daren Ackwood, her father's protégé. To see any of her inheritance, she's forced to team up with him. From his expensive car to those sexy dimples, Kayla's seen his type before. But Daren isn't who he seems to be... Struggling to make amends for his family's mistakes, Daren has a life more Oliver Twist than Richie Rich these days. He's beyond grateful that James Turner included him in his will, but working with Turner's princess of a daughter to fulfill his cryptic last wish is making Daren wonder if being broke is really so bad. Still, she's just as beautiful as she is stubborn, and the more time he spends with Kayla, the less it feels right being without her. Soon Daren and Kayla begin to wonder if maybe the best gift Kayla's dad could have left them... was each other.

I loved "Best Kind of Broken", but I confessed I approached this book a bit cautiously because I wasn't completely sure I would love the leading male character... If you read the first book you get why, still, I'm happy to say Daren completely surprised me.

In this second instalment we have a complete different situation with two poor—and I mean that literally—characters forced to stick together in order to get hold of an inheritance that will save them both. Well, it might if they find it, that is. The scavenger hunt they go through proves to be harder than anticipated and not just because of some cryptic clues, but also because of Kayla and Daren's attraction. They may have started with the wrong foot and made wrong assumptions too quickly, but after spending—have to spend—every single minute of the day together, things slip and secrets are revealed, leaving them both drooling over stupefied by unexpected charming traits... Their banters are flirty and funny, but their backgrounds are sad and unfair, which makes you sympathise with both and hope for the best.

I really enjoyed this book, it was a quick but sweet read with an original kind of, err, strings. It's not just Kayla and Daren who get to live a bit of an adventure, but the reader as well.

RATING: 3.5/5

New & Improved: Mind Reader 2.0!

 Mind Reader 2.0
Can I have your attention, please? *clears voice* On behalf of the blogging community—pretty sure all the great bloggers won't mind me doing this—I'd like to give the warmest of welcome backs to my bestie, Fran!

Some of you might have recognised her name because of her book blog, Mind Reader. She put it on a hiatus that, in the end, lasted two years... Well, we all know the struggle, right? Being a blogger is not as easy as many believe and sometimes we do need a break, especially if we are going through something personal, or life simply gets in the way. And when does that not happen? Fran had plenty on her plate, BUT she felt like this was the right time for her to re-open, AND with a nice change. From now on, she is going to talk about lots of things, not just books, and she certainly hopes to engage in conversations with everyone of you!

So, without further ado, here's the new & improved version of her previous blog, now called Mind Reader 2.0! Stop by, say hi, and don't forget to follow. Let's make Fran feel part of this amazing community again or, better yet, like she has never left! :D

P.S. Do you like the header? Guess who designed it? ;)
